Match analysis - 09/03 vs. Waller FC
Tonight saw us encounter Waller FC once more, a team who when we last faced them lost 2-0 to 2 early goals...game on.
As the game began, we looked to keep it tight at the back, priority number 1: don't concede 2 early goals again. Priority number 1 achieved, although our goal was being peppered with shots from the Waller striker, and they also hit our bar, but the net didn't bulge. We had a few attacks in the first half, and got a couple shots off, but nothing overly dramatic...until we won a corner. OK, winning a corner isn't overly dramatic, but Scott dropped off, Marcus found him on the edge of the D and Scott drilled it home in the bottom corner. We lead somewhat against the run of play...clinical you might say...
Before half time though, one of the Waller shots finally found the net, the classic not-so-Gulley defensive lapse in not sticking on the man out wide once more catching us off guard. After half time, we seemed to pick up a little. Defensively, our marking was a lot better yet when it came to closing down the ball as they push out of midfield we seemed to falter. The Waller forward drilled an unstoppable shot past Preston to make it 2-1 before we seemed once more to lose the urgency for the game. Stone came onto the pitch and in one of our meaningful attacks, managed to dribble himself into a good position and smash it home. Get in yo. So, 3 minutes to go, 2-2, see it out...we were content to sit back and soak it up, and were doing alright, until once more our marking superseeded our closing down in midfield, and they got a shot off which somehow found its way through two sets of legs, and found the net. 3-2, game over? No. We kept going, and in the dying seconds the ball found Edwardinho after some patient attacking play, who was unfortunate to have his shot stopped by the Waller GK, who had saved a couple of 1 on 1 attempts prior in the game also.
To conclude...we can take positives from the game, but there is still things I think we need to work on. Positives first: we had some good attacking moves, but we by no means had as many shots/chances as Waller, but what we did make was good shit yo. We had a couple of 1 on 1 situations, and some good long shots which got a corner/rebound attempt - good taking advantage of the slippery weather. Our marking in defense (obviously...) was very good. Every time they came at us, their attacking options had a man on them which was good to see.
But...we cannot afford to sacrifice closing the man on the ball down so much again when they come forward. And we have to start making ourselves available for the Cat on his goal kicks. I think these are a big problem, as we never show for him, and he does the best he can with what we give him. Come short - everyone we play does this so we should too. Chick (or whoever is in defense) and a midfielder - one either side of the D will make it easier and this way we actually retain possesion - switching side to side like Waller did so well tonight. We aren't a big side, and we're not amazing in the air compared with big-ass defenders, so giving the Cat no choice but long balls is wasteful and we lose possession. From here we need to start building with patience - a notable patient build up play resulted in Edwardinho's shot in the dying moments. The main thing is I think we are to over-eager to go forward and attack. Maybe we should start feeling comfortable maintaining possession (as the old saying goes, if you have the ball they can't score...unless of course you have Frank Sinclair but we don't so its OK) and not fearing passing it backwards - we have Chick and the Cat back there if needs be, so maybe we should start using (again, like Waller did tonight running us around, stretching us apart and creating space).
We have the skills going forward to score - we showed that by hitting some goals tonight with the few decent attacks we managed. Our defending close quarters has improved I think - tackles were going in, pressure applied and all men marked. We tracked well once more and we didn't get caught with one man at the back at all tonight which is proof of this. We have to build on this marking with closing down the men in the midfield now too, potentially eliminating 2 of their goals which came from distance shots.
The building blocks are there. We showed tonight we can mark. Develop this, and incorporate closing down all over the park. We were more clinical tonight than usual with our shots.
If we calm our attacking mentality (not helped by basically all our players naturally being attacking lol) and switch to a more patient build up style, and keep possession which was our main problem tonight, we can progress. The goals are coming from all over now as well which is good let's keep it up gangstas, its happening slowly but surely
...I know that seems like a massive rant lol but it's not meant to be!!!
