Match analysis - 4/5/08 vs. Red34FC

So new season, new league, new teams...old teams with new players?!...lets roll

A humid K2 arena hosted some more League 1 action this evening, with Straight Gulley up against Red34FC - missing the recognised best player, replaced with some new guys we haven't before faced, so uncharted territory(ish) but were we phased? Pfft.

The game started with Gulley on the front foot, gameplan to get an early lead and build over the course of the game. Chasing every ball, it wasn't very long before Scott picked up the ball midfield and a smooth one-two with Marcus found Scott one on one and the net bulging. 1-0 Gulley, so far so good. However, the lead was short lived as losing the ball in a dangerous area proved costly and let Red34 back in the game. Blow for blow, perhaps this new team could be a different story...

The new (for us anyway) Red34 guys had pace and movement, causing Gulley to have to concentrate more on defending than perhaps we had originally planned to. But, for once, we could actually muscle them off the ball fairly easily, throwing our bodies in shoulder to shoulder upset them, which was fun, and also got us the ball back. Good times. And soon this paid dividends as Scott won the ball and slotted it home. Beginning to tire, we kinda needed half time, and it showed as we once more slipped up defensively not getting back letting them find themselves in a two on one situation to equalise at 2-2. Pushing for that extra goal after half time, Stone found himself in the middle of the park, and shot - blocked. And shot again - blocked again. Surely this was even more annoying for Stone than Titus Bramble is in general, but not to be put off, Stone focused the frustration into power and smashed the shit out of it into the bottom corner just before half time came...score!

The humidity set in even more after half time, despite the rest, and the tracking back after some of our attacks was beginning to lapse. We were 3-2 up, and taking the foot off of the gas a bit we seemed to sit more. Til a lack of closing down allowed a shot to be fired in which unfortunately found its way past the Cat in goal, drawing the game level at 3-3. Riled up? Yezzir. We went for that motherbitch and started pushing for it. Challenging for the ball, passing and moving (as much as the humidity allowed anyway...) The attacking moves came one after the other (interspersed with some Red34FC longer shots that were plucked out of the top corner by a full stretch Cat - real photo friendly moments likely to attract the scouts for next week; and one notable booboo we made from a corner that the Cat leapt on like a beast, lucky to escape after an obvious handball).

By the end, G must have hit the post/bar/both about 86 times, Stone a further 47, Scott chasing down and blocking a GK clearance that bounced off his ass into the post then behind him and somehow back to the GK, summing up our luck. Shot totals must've reached well into the hundreds. Any other day we could've seriously had another 7 or 8 (compared to their 2 or 3 if we were Catless).
All that remains to mention is the outrageous, incomprehensible, ridiculous, beyond fooking belief, dickweed, non-sensical Mark Clattenburg-style decision to call back a drop ball for no real reason seeing as both sides had played on; and the obligatory injury (although NOT CUT!!! that was for Preston...) to my knee, moments from the end in another inches-from-scoring incident.

So...OK we weren't exactly at our Gulley best, but we didn't play badly when you consider our relative fitness and the humid conditions. We created a squillion chances that we need to start converting, and any other day we would've won comfortably.
And when a Red34FC player gives Man of the Match to their crossbar, that pretty much says it all.

Until next week Gulley troops...WOO HA SPARTANS.

i agree marcus, not our worst performance in the world but these exotic temperatures were against us, we all perspired like we never had before!

i no we say it every week, but just think if we scored half our shots, or half our shots that hit the post/bar/angle of the 2 we would win every game

it will come, our movement is also getting better slowly

and as regards to the 'drop ball'.....

the refereeeeeeeeeeeess a WANKER!!!!!

It did majorly reek of unfairness but hopefully with solid determination...that we all have...we'll come out on top in the end. Lady luck just wasn't on our side. The movement is loads better though and we really are creating the chances which can only be positive.
